Small Editions hosts educational workshops on different print and publishing-related topics throughout the year. Through our workshop program, we hope to share our expertise in book-making to a wider community outside of our client work. All workshops are held in-person at our studio, unless otherwise noted.

We’ve also taught, lectured, and hosted workshops at institutions across North America and Europe, including Yale School of Art, Princeton University, and Pratt Institute, among others.

Accessibility
The entrance to our building has a ramp, and our studio—located on the 5th floor—can be reached by elevator. There is a gender neutral bathroom that is wheelchair accessible, but there is no railing. We have a small studio dog—please contact us for further allergen details!

Financial Accessibility
We price our workshops to account for facilitator time, equipment usage, and materials. Small Editions offers financial support to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) individuals who face systemic barriers to accessing creative education and resources.

We strongly encourage individuals from these communities to apply for a scholarship, as well as those who face other forms of marginalization. Scholarship applications can be found on individual workshop pages.

PAPER + INK: PAPER AS MATERIAL AND METAPHOR$450
with Isobel Chiang and Hannah Pierce

Paper is a crucial part of a book maker’s craft. Using paper in interesting and thoughtful ways requires not only material sensitivity, but a deep knowledge of how paper is made, distributed, printed on, and bound together. “Paper + Ink: Paper as Material and Metaphor” is a 3 day workshop that focuses on paper within the context of book making, exploring the relationship between paper, printing, and binding.

Click here for the full class syllabus.

This is an in-person workshop located at Small Editions’ studio in Brooklyn, NY, with a maximum of 12 participants. We think it’s most suitable for graphic designers, book makers, and folks working in print/book publishing, but any and all are welcome. This class is both theoretical and practical in nature: you’ll leave with a high-level understanding of paper and print production, as well as a game plan for how to implement this knowledge in future book projects.

The cost of this workshop is $450. Tuition includes a custom take-home swatch book, which students will use and refer to throughout the workshop, and which can be used as a tool for their practice moving forward.

INTRO TO FOIL STAMPING$115
            WORKSHOP

Hot foil stamping is a finishing process used for many book projects, typically as a cover treatment. Foil stamping uses a die (usually magnesium) and colored foil with an adhesive backing.

“Intro to Foil Stamping” is an in-person workshop at Small Editions’ studio that will teach students how to set up and execute foil stamping projects. Students will gain hands-on experience stamping with our Kensol and KwikPrint machines. We’ll try out different foil types and paper substrates, all the while troubleshooting common foil-stamping problems.

The workshop has a maximum of 8 participants. We think it’s most suitable for graphic designers, book makers, and folks working in print/book publishing, but any and all are welcome.

The cost of this workshop is $115. Tuition includes ten spiral-bound notebooks stamped with your own custom magnesium die (which can be used for future projects). Please note prior knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite is highly recommended if you’d like to create a custom magnesium die.

Registration before July 12th is required for all participants wishing to make dies. Files must be received by July 14th in order to make dies in time for class.
